Pointing for walls in Pennine weather
Littleborough sits at the foot of the Pennines, and its stone cottages and terraces get driving rain and hard frosts. The pointing takes the brunt. On a stone wall, joints are often wider and less even than on brick, and when the mortar has gone the rain runs straight into the core of the wall.
Most older stone walls here were built in lime, and lime pointing for period houses is usually the right way to repoint them. Brick walls and newer additions may suit standard brick repointing in a cement-based mortar.
If a stone head over a window has cracked, see our page on lintel repair in Littleborough. The pointing guide covers lime, cement and the different joint finishes.

Why stone walls need the right mortar
Stone cottages here were built to breathe. Rain soaks a short way into the stone and the lime joints, then dries out again when the weather turns. Repointing in hard cement stops that drying. The moisture is held in the stone, frost lifts its face, and damp starts showing inside on the most exposed walls.
Many of these houses have been repointed in cement at some point, often in a raised or smeared style that sits over the stone edges. Taking it out without breaking the stone is slow, careful work. Once it is out, we repoint in lime, laid in thin layers, and protect it from rain and frost while it cures.

Littleborough repointing questions
How much is repointing a stone terrace in Littleborough?
A standard terraced front is from £1,850 and so is a terraced rear. A semi-detached front or rear starts from £2,450 per wall. Cutting out hard cement from stone, high gables, chimney stacks or a lot of loose stone pushes the cost above those starting points.
Why is lime better on stone?
Lime is softer and lets moisture move out of the wall. Cement holds it in, which is what causes stone faces to flake. On old stone walls lime is usually the better choice.
Can you just do the wall that faces the weather?
Yes. The most exposed wall often fails first. We can repoint that elevation now and look at the others later.
How long does lime take to set?
Lime cures more slowly than cement and needs protecting from frost, heavy rain and fast drying for a while after it goes in. We plan the work around the forecast for that reason.
Will the joints look the same as before?
We match the finish to the house, whether that is flush, slightly recessed or brushed back. We avoid the raised strap pointing that traps water on stone.
